World Celebrates IGD 2024

As October 6th arrived, people from all around the world came together to celebrate the third International Geodiversity Day. Follow along for a tour of just some of the many events that took place in 2024.


At the Tethys Fossil Museum in India, Prof Arun Deep Ahluwalia lead a tour for families from Dangyari and the surrounding villages.


At UNESCO HQ, the Secretariat, in partnership with the Permanent Delegations of Kazakhstan, Poland, Portugal, and United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, organised a series of talks to explore UNESCO’s commitment to advancing geodiversity and sustainable development.


The Southern African Young Geomorphologists organised a special field trip, exploring the landscapes of Lochs Hoek Farm, Bloemfontein, South Africa.


In Guatemala, they celebrated International Geodiversity Day with a conference and photo exhibition, highlighting the geological wonders of their country.


Students in Viet Nam celebrated International Geodiversity Day with a number of special events.


A very successful Geodiversity Day event was organised in Croatia called 'Get to know the Earth - Peek into the Microscope', at the Biokovo - Imotska Lakes UNESCO Global Geopark.


Bangalore University, in collaboration with the Geological Society of India and the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), celebrated International Geodiversity Day 2024. The event aimed to emphasize the importance of geodiversity in preserving Earth's resources for future generations.


In Chile, the National Geology and Mining Service celebrated Geodiversity Day with a public Geodiversity Festival, inviting people to visit and explore the wonders of our planet..


Delegates at the European Geoparks Conference celebrated with a presentation on the newest IUGS Geosites that are located within European UNESCO Global Geoparks.


The Cabo Ortegal Geopark celebrated with a day in which experts debated different key aspects of the Geopark such as its biological, geological, archaeological, architectural heritage and its tourist potential, among others. The event was led by Nahúm Méndez, with the participation of the Spanish Geological Society and the Geopark Scientific Committee.
