Geoparks Celebrate IGD 2024

UNESCO's Global Geoparks will be celebrating International Geodiversity Day all around the world. Here are a selection of the events happening in 2024:

Geoparque Oeste, Portugal, will be hosting guided tours of their Interpretation Centre. Visitors will journey through 250 million years of earth history, featuring the birth of the Atlantic Ocean, the dinosaurs and their trails, the appearance of man, the great civilizations, the Portuguese conquests and the customs and traditions that shape the personality and daily lives of the people of the territory.

Cuilcagh Lakelands, UK-Ireland, will be organising a number of events engaging with themes across geodiversity. Visitors will have the chance to join a guided geological tour along the Owenbreen River, or become a Rock Detective! In the evenings there will also be Dark Sky and Moon observation.

Muroto, Japan, are hosting a talk show titled "Eon-spanning Journeys Through Earth and Time", which has been produced by Itoigawa Geopark, and the Japanese Geoparks Network.

Mëllerdall, Luxembourg, will be guiding visitors on a hike to their 'Geosite of the Year' - Wanterbaach-Siweschlëff.

Basque Coast, Spain, have organised 'Geoaltxorraren bila' - "In Search of Geo-Treasure". This is a competition similar to geocaching, with QR codes placed around the Geopark, encouraging visitors to collect 8 of the regions most important geosites. There's a reward for those who make it!
